The misuse of Scopes

I'd like to flag up that not all waste GHG emissions are categorised in Scope 3. Emissions from EfW waste incinerators are classed Scope 2, meaning that they are attributed to the users of any electricity, ie those who have little or no power to control those emissions. Those who produce the waste, those who produce unreusable and unrecyclable stuff, those who fail to sort their discards, are absolved of all responsibility. This perverse anomaly has been pointed out by Alasdair Hedger of Ellen MacArthur Foundation, who has now been appointed to the Technical Advisory Committee on Scope 3 Emissions. It has also been explained in this document: https://ukwin.org.uk/files/pdf/UKWIN-Climate-Reporting-Briefing-August-2024.pdf. As if to confirm how absurd this situation is, GHG emissions from fossil fuel derived waste (eg plastics) burnt in cement kilns are appropriately classed Scope 3. Hopefully your cards can be customised to accommodate these discrepancies and absurdities, but you may also wish to be on standby for Waste GHG emissions to be reclassified by the GHG Protocol committees.

Thanks for the review Neil! We'll be reviewing and updating materials in like with GHG as we go. We also keep the virtual Notion resources up to date with any caveats or nuances with things like this, as it's constantly evolving. We've tried to simplify the GHG protocol as much as possible so that businesses can wrap their heads around it as there's a lot of nuance and slightly confusing guidance out there for it, like you highlight. We'll customise and update as we go, but sadly can't influence the GHG Protocols directly - at least not yet!

I think that it has huge potential and is a great idea... I think it is overpriced for the mass market with respect to other board games available. I also think there are some quick addons and adjustments that would make it much better... Happy to talk to Val or Adam when they have time... We are doing a run through on Monday so will have more feedback then. We would like to share our ideas with you... Sadly my box weas delayed and when it arrived the box was broken! But you had kindly included the beautiful Pub in a tin game as well... WE also have ideas about the Pub version to make it go further... Best regards Debbie

Great Idea for Carbon Awareness

Love the idea of this, Had a little look but need to read up on how to use it. Checked out the low to high emissions cards and our eyes were opened.

Higher Lower Game is a great ice-breaker

We used the game to kick of a sustainability meeting and it gave people confidence that they know more than they thought, but also surprised some. Overall, a great primer to get into action mode.
